The fifth century BC legal code at Gortys, on Crete. It is written in boustrophedon – or ‘cow turning round’ style, like a cow turning round at the end of a plough-line in a field. Here, the top line is back to front. The next line reads normally.
The Gortys code dealt with adultery, divorce, property, marriage, adoption and rape. Rape was punished with fines on a sliding scale depending on status. A free man who raped a slave was given a small fine; a slave who raped a free man got the heaviest fine.
